Classes Up Close: Digital Film

IMG_0907-0.jpgIn our next installment of our “Classes Up Close” we are featuring a class that has been running since we began offering classes at Immanuel Lutheran Church: what used to be called “Intro to Film.” Led by Rebekah Tracy, students with all different experience levels have learned how to create a film from scratch and take it to the next level of professionalism. Rebekah earned her bachelor’s degree in Communication Arts at Framingham State University and has embarked on her career doing freelance video work. Here is a 2-minute video she produced a few years back (if you don’t see a video, click here to watch it on YouTube):

Living in a digital world, the next generation tends to be very familiar with all things media. However… they don’t always have a proper knowledge of the very equipment they use so frequently. Our “Capture It” classes help them to take their digital experience to the next level- learning artistic technique and understanding the basic framework of how digital media works best.

Intro To Film for ages 12-18

In this class, students learn the basics of film: including how to use a camera, how to frame a scene, the basics of lighting, the importance of color, and how to edit all the separate shots into a short film.  Students need to have access to a digital camera.  DSLR cameras are ideal, but are not necessary.  Any working camera with a viewing screen will work. Students who have taken Rebekah’s class before will be given new material to challenge them. (Read more about Rebekah here).

As an extension of both the fall class and Rebekah’s previous classes, our Spring Film option will build on what students have learned (while introducing new students to the basic concepts early in the class). Students will dive even deeper into their material to gain a greater knowledge of what it takes to create a short film.
