Hi everyone, it’s Miss Jen here! (That’s me, laughing at this past year’s graduating class as they tried their 2019 glasses on).
It’s been a while and there’s a lot to catch up on!
Here we are, approaching another year of classes geared towards the incredible homeschool community that AWIP is a part of. We are so grateful to be able to partner with homeschooling families so that they can provide opportunities in the arts for their children without the high costs and intense atmospheres that other schools demand.
We took the summer off this year – the first time in seven years! And as we approach our seventh season, we look back on where we have been. A Work in Progress Productions has always been a dream. In all honesty, I have always wanted to run a theatre company, ever since I was a kid. I have always hoped to reach different communities through the arts, to make an impact and inspire those we serve.
Yet when AWIP began seven years ago, even I didn’t realize that *this was it* – this was the company I had had in my heart since I was seven. It’s possible that you have already heard these stats before: It started as 2 classes with 15 students in each, attempting to meet the need to have more programs in the arts among the homeschooling community. Within a year AWIP had doubled in size, and now we are approaching a year with 50 classes, 20 teachers and staff members, and productions that attract over 500 audience members per night!
Yet AWIP is much more than numbers. Students have found genuine connections as they collaborate+ create with kids just like them. They have discovered the triumph of being part of a team, accomplishing goals that seemed insurmountable at the beginning of the semester. They discover talents they didn’t know they had, and passions that may open doors to potential career paths.
This is what it’s like to be a part of AWIP (note that this video features our older students… snippets of our younger students will be featured next!):
